The Grounded Life: Quick To Listen

God gives us His Word to live a grounded life. His Word reveals His character, renews our mind, and gives us direction to navigate our relationship with Him and others. He desires have healthy communication in our relationships. But, a hasty reaction, a harsh word, a preoccupied mind can quickly send emotions reeling. In James 1:19–20, God shares wisdom for communicating with others:

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”

So basic, so logical, and yet so challenging to do.

Being quick to listen doesn’t come naturally, but with a humble heart and God’s help, we can train ourselves to be better listeners. By paying attention to people’s words, their volume, their tone, their nonverbal cues, and their emotional state, and being curious, we are showing respect and learning to listen.

Listening is active.

Listening is intentional.

Listening seeks to understand.

Listening gives us time to tune in to the Holy Spirit, asking Him to guide our words.

Who knows – maybe God has given us two ears and one mouth, to equip us to listen more?! Let’s choose to seek God’s way for a grounded life and watch our relationships thrive!

Dear God,

Thank You for Your words of wisdom. Teach me to listen with love. Please guide me as I commit to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Give me ears that hear, a mind that seeks to understand, words that bring life, and a heart overflowing with Your love. Let my actions reflect your patience with me. Thank You for your mercy and grace as I apply your wisdom to my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
