The Grounded Life: Do not lose heart

Life isn’t always easy. When it doesn’t go as planned, we can grow weary and lose heart. Jesus knew that in this world we would have trouble, but He said we can have peace in Him and take heart because He has overcome the world (John 16:33). That’s great news, but how do you take heart when you are in the middle of the trouble?

Maybe you are experiencing loneliness as you wait for that right person to come along, rejection after being passed over yet again for that job you so desperately need, the bitterness of betrayal in marriage, sorrow after losing the baby you’ve been longing for, or fear as your family is falling apart.

You can take the pain, the fear, the anger, the disappointment to Jesus and pour your heart out to Him. Maybe your tears need permission to flow. It is okay to lament that life isn’t how you imagined it would be. As you tell Jesus about it, you are making space in your heart for His love and power.

Then remind yourself of the truth, over and over and over again.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.—2 Corinthians 4:7–9

As a child of God, you have the same power that raised Jesus from the grave, alive and at work in you! You can trust Him to work through the brokenness, the pain, and the disappointment. Jesus has overcome death. He has overcome the world. Do not lose heart! Your broken pieces have purpose. God will work something beautiful through it all.
