Have you ever looked out the window while on the road and noticed how fast you’re going? Perhaps you are a kid sitting in the backseat when it first dawns on you; you are in a vehicle careening down the highway.
You stare at the lines as they dart past, the powerlines fly in and out of vision in a split second, the trees blur. A wave of anxiety might hit as you feel the fragility of the moment. Flinging toward some destination in a metal box, you might lose track of where you’re going for a bit.
On April 26, 2024, For King + Country’s film, Unsung Hero, will be released to theatres. Featuring Joel Smallbone, Daisy Betts, Candace Cameron-Bure, Hilary Scott, and other beloved stars in the inspirational film industry, this film will tell the story of the Smallbone family, who, much like a vehicle driving quickly down the highway, were careening toward a destination that only God could have planned. One that gave the world Rebecca St. James and For King + Country.
But it’s more than a movie about the creation of beloved music artists.
In 1991, the Smallbone family probably felt a sense of fragility in the chaos of their lives. David Smallbone (played by Joel Smallbone), his wife, Helen (Daisy Betts), and their seven children had journeyed across the Pacific Ocean and were attempting to make their home in Nashville, Tennessee.
The family had taken the leap from the Land Down Under to the United States in hopes of finding more success with David’s passion for music after his company shuts down in Australia. With very little to their names, the Smallbones all work incredibly hard in order to make ends meet in their new home.
The struggle is tough, but as the labor-filled days fly by, Helen Smallbone is steadfast in her faith, providing the family with direction. Much like a driver in a speeding car would hold to their GPS to guide them to the destination, she held tightly to her faith as her family navigated unknown territory.
Meanwhile, David’s determination allows the kids to discover their unique talent for music. The couple realize their daughter, Rebecca, has a gift for music production, and the movie follows their growth as a family through the toughest of battles.
Overall, the story of Unsung Hero illustrates the tenacity and perseverance that David and Helen have – one that many immigrants may be able to understand. A strength that might often go unnoticed, and a sacrifice that enables generations after them to grow into all that God meant them to be.
Joel and Luke Smallbone, dedicated their song – also named Unsung Hero – to their parents. Describing their strength and love within the lyrics:
You’re strong like your father even when you are scared
For King + Country, Unsung Hero
When I was in trouble, you never left me there
And you love like your mother, like there’s nothing to lose
You’re an unsung hero, so I’ll sing this song for you
The date that the movie will be released, April 26, 2024, is also significant to the Smallbone family. Though not planned, the release date rests on David and Helen’s 49th wedding anniversary.
And as Mother’s Day approaches, and Father’s Day afterward, this movie may be a celebration of great parents everywhere. A dedication to each mother who gently held us in her arms as a babe, or the fathers who took the time to share their passion with us. To those who help us keep faith and stay grounded.
You’re an adult now, sitting in the driver’s seat, and you’re focused on the road ahead. You may know the way to your destination, or you might use a GPS. Regardless, you are now driving the route with purpose. Focusing on the destination, you can bring yourself – and even help bring friends and family – to the place you are meant to be. Just like those before you.
